Upcountry, Maui is one of the most beautiful places to go to on Maui. It consists of several small towns in the cool mountains of Maui and yes, it's the country.
Makawao is in the beginning and Pukalani would be next. Both are the towns to be in if you want the country, yet like the busy-ness feeling of being downtown.
Haiku would be a little bit deeper in and a little bit more dead. If you've hit Haiku, you're on your way to the curvy roads and waterfalls.
For me, I love the small town feeling I get from being Upcountry. It's quiet and away from everything. If you want peace and relaxation, take a drive Upcountry.
